# Planting Schedules

## Overview
Seed-to-harvest calendar organized by season. Based on germination temperatures, frost sensitivity, and days-to-harvest from product data.

## Spring Planting (Soil 40-65°F, Early-Mid Spring)

### Cool-Season Crops — Direct Sow Early
| Crop | Sow When | Days to Harvest | Notes |
|------|----------|----------------|-------|
| [[snowball-turnips]] | 3 weeks before last frost | 35-50 days | Fastest root veg, great for quick harvest |
| [[sugar-lace-snap-peas]] | 3 weeks before last frost | 50-60 days | Self-supporting, semi-leafless |
| [[scarlett-nantes-carrot]] | 3 weeks before last frost | 65-75 days | Thin seedlings for bigger roots |
| [[white-bunching-onion]] | 2-3 months before last frost (indoors) | 60-80 days | Overwinters, spring bunching |
| [[utah-celery]] | 10-12 weeks before last frost (indoors) | 100-130 days | Longest growing season |
| [[butter-crunch-butterhead-lettuce]] | As soon as soil workable (35°F+) | 45-60 days | Dormant above 75°F, succession plant |
| [[bulls-blood-beets]] | 3 weeks before last frost | 50-60 days | Cool-season preferred |
| [[red-russian-kale]] | Early spring or 3 months before first frost | 50-60 days | Sweetens with frost, best as fall crop |

### Warm-Season — Start Indoors
| Crop | Start Indoors | Transplant When | Days to Harvest | Notes |
|------|---------------|-----------------|----------------|-------|
| [[large-leaf-basil]] | 3-4 weeks before last frost | After frost, 70°F+ | 60-70 days | Needs warmth, prune for bushy growth |
| [[roma-tomatoes]] | 6-8 weeks before last frost | After frost, 65°F+ | 70-80 days | Staking required |
| [[jalapeno-peppers]] | 8-10 weeks before last frost | After frost, 70°F+ | 70-80 days | Slowest to germinate of warm crops |
| [[california-wonder-sweet-pepper]] | 8-10 weeks before last frost | After frost, 70°F+ | 60-80 days | Green to red ripening |

## Late Spring/Early Summer (Soil 65-75°F, After Last Frost)

### Direct Sow
| Crop | Sow When | Days to Harvest | Notes |
|------|----------|----------------|-------|
| [[provider-green-bush-beans]] | 1+ week after last frost | 50-55 days | Cold-sensitive, succession plant |
| [[pickling-cucumber]] | After frost, 65°F soil | 50-60 days | Peat pots if starting indoors |
| [[dark-green-zucchini-squash]] | 1 week after last frost, 70°F soil | 50 days | Heavy producer, space 8-10 ft apart |
| [[yellow-dent-corn]] | After all frost, 65°F soil | Varies | Plant in blocks for pollination |

### Transplant Outdoors
| Crop | When | Notes |
|------|------|-------|
| [[large-leaf-basil]] | After frost, 70°F+ | 15-18" apart |
| [[roma-tomatoes]] | After frost, 65°F+ | Stake immediately |
| [[jalapeno-peppers]] | After frost, 70°F+ | Protect below 55°F |
| [[utah-celery]] | 5-6" tall seedlings, 50°F soil | 8-12" apart |

## Early Summer (Soil 75-85°F)

### Direct Sow
| Crop | Sow When | Days to Harvest | Notes |
|------|----------|----------------|-------|
| [[crimson-sweet-watermelon]] | After last frost, 75°F soil | 85-90 days | Needs heat, 8-10 ft spacing |
| [[jack-o-lantern-pumpkin]] | After last frost, 60°F soil | 90-110 days | 8-10 ft spacing |
| [[luffa-sponge-gourd]] | After last frost, 70°F soil | 100+ days | Soak seeds overnight, trellis |
| [[coriander-cilantro]] | Spring or fall (bolts in heat) | 45-70 days leaves | Succession sow every 2-3 weeks |
| [[catnip-herb]] | After frost, 60°F soil | Ongoing | Perennial, may self-sow |

## Fall Planting (3-6 Weeks Before First Frost)

### Cool-Season Crops — Direct Sow
| Crop | Sow When | Notes |
|------|----------|-------|
| [[red-russian-kale]] | 3 months before first frost | Sweetens with frost |
| [[snowball-turnips]] | 2-3 months before first frost | Quick harvest, greens in 20-30 days |
| [[scarlett-nantes-carrot]] | 2-3 months before first frost | Store well in fall harvest |
| [[sugar-beets]] | Late summer for fall harvest | Store well, 90-120 day cycle |
| [[butter-crunch-butterhead-lettuce]] | 6 weeks before first frost | Cool weather crop |
| [[white-bunching-onion]] | Overwinters | Spring harvest |

### Herbs — Fall
| Crop | Sow When | Notes |
|------|----------|-------|
| [[coriander-cilantro]] | Fall planting avoids bolting | Harvest leaves before cold |

## Succession Planting Tips
- **Lettuce, beans, cucumbers**: Sow every 2-3 weeks for continuous harvest
- **Cilantro**: Sow every 2-3 weeks (bolts quickly in heat)
- **Root vegetables**: Plant at different times for staggered harvest
- **Peas**: Early spring only in warm climates

## Indoor Start vs Direct Sow Quick Reference
