🌱 Analyzing Our Plant Data

Week 16 — Monday | Plant Needs Experiment Results

📖 Reading Time

For the last few weeks, we have been scientists! We grew plants and gave them different treatments. Some plants got everything they needed. Other plants were missing something — like water or sunlight. Now it is time for the most exciting part: looking at our results!

Scientists finish an experiment by drawing a conclusion. A conclusion is what you learned from your experiment. But a good scientist never just guesses. A conclusion must be based on evidence. Evidence is what you actually saw and measured — like how tall a plant grew, or what color its leaves turned.

To find evidence, scientists compare their plants. Remember, we changed only one thing for each plant. That one thing is called the variable. If the plant with no water turned brown and droopy, and the plant with water stayed green and tall, we have evidence! Our conclusion: plants need water to grow. When we look carefully at our results, the plants tell us their story.

✏️ Reading Questions

1. What is a conclusion?

2. What is evidence?

3. What do we call the one thing we changed for each plant?

4. Why do scientists compare their plants instead of just guessing?

🔍 Compare the Plants

Look at each pair of plants from our experiment. Circle which plant you think grew better.

Plant A

Plant B

Which grew better? (circle)

Got water every day

Got no water

Plant A / Plant B

Sat in a sunny window

Sat in a dark closet

Plant A / Plant B

Had healthy soil

Had rocks instead of soil

Plant A / Plant B

Got fresh air

Was sealed in a bag

Plant A / Plant B

🔍 True or False — Circle Your Answer

1. A conclusion is what you learned from an experiment.

2. Good scientists guess without looking at evidence.

3. Evidence is what you actually saw and measured.

4. We changed many things for each plant at once.

5. A plant with no water may turn brown and droopy.

6. Comparing plants helps us find evidence.

🎨 Draw the Evidence

Draw what a plant WITH water looks like, and what a plant WITHOUT water looks like.

🔬 Activity Preview

Coming Wednesday: We will turn our plant measurements into a bar graph! A graph is a picture of our data that makes it easy to see which plant grew the most.

Think about it: Which of our plants do you think grew the tallest? Why?
