"This week we sailed down the longest river in the world — the mighty Nile! We learned that ancient Egypt was in Africa, and that almost everyone lived close to the river's banks. The rest of Egypt was hot, dry desert.",
"Every year, the Nile flooded and left behind rich black mud called silt. Farmers grew wheat, barley, beans, and melons in this 'black land.' Egyptians sailed boats on the river, dug canals, and lifted water with a clever tool called a shaduf.",
"No wonder people say Egypt was 'the gift of the Nile.' Without the river, there would have been no farms, no boats, no cities — no ancient Egypt at all!"
