Week 20 • Monday • Oral Tradition and Storytellers

🎯 This Week's Goals

This week you will learn:

• How Native nations passed down knowledge through stories
• What oral tradition means
• About legends that explain the world
• How music, dance, and ceremonies keep traditions alive

📖 Reading Time

Long ago, most Native nations did not write books. So how did they remember their history, their lessons, and their beliefs? Through stories!

Elders — wise older people — told stories to children around the fire. The children grew up, remembered every word, and told the same stories to THEIR children. Passing knowledge by speaking and listening is called oral tradition. Some stories have been passed down this way for thousands of years!

Stories did big jobs: they explained how the world began, taught right from wrong, and made long winter nights fun. A good storyteller was one of the most treasured people in the whole nation.
