📖 Reading Time

Native American homes were as different as the nations who built them — and every home was perfect for its place!

On the plains, families lived in tipis — cone-shaped tents of buffalo hide over wooden poles. Tipis could be packed up fast when it was time to follow the herds. In the eastern woodlands, the Haudenosaunee built longhouses — long wooden homes where many related families lived together.

In the Southwest, people built pueblos — apartment-style adobe buildings, some several stories tall, that stayed cool in the desert heat. Some pueblos are over 1,000 years old and people STILL live in them today!
