🎭 Greek Theater

Week 9 • Wednesday • Masks, Plays, and Big Crowds

📖 Reading Time

Do you like movies and shows? Then thank the ancient Greeks — they invented theater! Huge outdoor theaters were carved into hillsides, shaped like giant half-circles. The theater in Athens could hold more than 15,000 people!

Actors wore big masks with wide-open mouths so their voices carried far and everyone could see if the character was happy or sad. There were two main kinds of plays: comedy (funny plays that made people laugh) and tragedy (sad, serious plays). Our happy-and-sad mask symbols come from these!

The hillside shape made sound bounce perfectly — in some ancient theaters, you can still hear a whisper from the stage all the way in the back row. Clever building AND great stories: that's why theater has lasted 2,500 years.

Make a Greek theater mask! Choose comedy (big smile) or tragedy (big frown). Cut eye holes, decorate it, and then act out a tiny play for your family using your mask voice — nice and LOUD like a Greek actor.
