<p>Historians are like detectives. They cannot travel back in time, so they hunt for clues that the past left behind. An object made or used by people long ago is called an <strong>artifact</strong>. Old coins, tools, toys, and pots are all artifacts.</p>
<p>Some special scientists, called <strong>archaeologists</strong>, dig carefully in the ground to find artifacts. They use small brushes and shovels so nothing breaks. Every artifact tells a story. A clay pot might show what people cooked. A toy might show what children played with.</p>
<p>Clues from the past are called <strong>evidence</strong>. Letters, photographs, buildings, and even old bones are evidence too. When historians put many clues together, they can tell the story of people who lived long, long ago.</p>
