Everything around you is made of matter. Matter comes in three states. The three states are solid, liquid, and gas.
A solid keeps its own shape. A rock is a solid. A block is a solid. You can hold a solid in your hand. It does not change shape by itself.
A liquid flows and takes the shape of its container. Water is a liquid. Juice is a liquid. Pour a liquid into a cup. It becomes cup-shaped!
A gas spreads out to fill all the space it can. Air is a gas. The bubbles in soda are gas. Most gases are invisible, but they are still matter.
Matter can change states. Ice can melt into water. Water can turn into steam. The matter is still water — only its state changes!
