A solid is matter that keeps its own shape. A rock stays a rock. A spoon stays a spoon. Solids do not flow like liquids. They do not spread out like gases.

Solids have properties. A property is something you can observe about an object. Some solids are hard, like a rock. Some are soft, like a pillow. Some bend, like a rubber band. Some break, like a cracker.

Solids can be big or small, heavy or light, rough or smooth. You can describe a solid using many properties at once. A marble is small, smooth, hard, and round!

Because solids keep their shape, we can build with them. Houses, bridges, and towers are all made of solids. This week you will explore solids and even build with them!
