Texture is how a material feels when you touch it. There are many texture words. Smooth things feel even, like glass. Rough things feel bumpy, like sandpaper. Soft things squish, like a pillow. Fuzzy things feel furry, like a teddy bear.
Your fingertips are amazing tools. They can feel tiny bumps your eyes cannot see! Scientists use touch to learn about materials. They record texture in charts so they can compare materials later.
Today you will hunt for textures all around your home. You will make a texture chart, just like a materials scientist. Ready, set, hunt!
1. What is texture?
2. Name something smooth and something rough.
Ask a grown-up before touching anything. Do not touch sharp, hot, or breakable things. Wash your hands after the hunt.
Walk around your home. Find one object for each texture. Write what you found.
| Texture | Object I found | Where I found it |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth | ||
| Rough | ||
| Soft | ||
| Hard | ||
| Fuzzy | ||
| Bumpy |
Write each object under the best texture word: mirror, bark, kitten, brick, marble, blanket.
| Smooth | Rough | Soft |
|---|---|---|
Close your eyes. Have a grown-up hand you three objects, one at a time. Feel each one. Guess what it is using only touch!
| Object | How it felt (texture words) | My guess | Was I right? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | YES / NO | ||
| 2 | YES / NO | ||
| 3 | YES / NO |
Count the objects in one room. Make a tally mark for each texture you find. Which texture won?
| Texture | Tally marks | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth | ||
| Rough | ||
| Soft |
