# 2nd Grade Math Curriculum — 32 Weeks

## Overview

A complete 32-week, 5-phase math curriculum for second grade. Each week covers
a focused topic with daily lessons building toward mastery. Designed for
homeschool use with hands-on practice, word problems, and visual activities.

**Structure:** 5 phases, 32 weeks, Mon–Fri lessons per week.
**Format:** 10 problems per lesson, horizontal math format.

## Phase 1: Number Sense & Foundations (Weeks 1–6)

Build confidence with numbers to 100. Place value, comparison, ordering, and
fluency with addition and subtraction facts within 20.

## Phase 2: Addition & Subtraction to 100 (Weeks 7–14)

Two- and three-digit operations. Regrouping strategies, mental math, and
multi-step word problems.

**Teaching Notes:**
- Teach the open number line alongside standard algorithms — it builds
  number sense and serves as a check.
- Week 13: introduce "borrowing across zero" slowly with manipulatives.
- Week 14: emphasize circling key words (altogether, left, difference).

## Phase 3: Measurement, Time & Money (Weeks 15–20)

Real-world math. Hands-on measuring, reading clocks, handling coins and bills,
and interpreting simple data.

**Teaching Notes:**
- Phase 3 is the most visual — use actual rulers, clocks, and real coins
  whenever possible.
- Week 17: start with elapsed time in whole hours, then move to 5-minute
  increments.
- Week 20: bring in real data (class favorites, weather tracking) to make
  graphs meaningful.

## Phase 4: Geometry & Fractions (Weeks 21–26)

Shapes, attributes, symmetry, area/perimeter, and an introduction to
fractions as equal parts of a whole.

- Week 24: keep area and perimeter separate at first — don't combine until
  Week 26 review.
- Week 25: emphasize "equal parts" — unequal parts are not fractions.

## Phase 5: Multiplication, Division & Patterns (Weeks 27–32)

Introduction to multiplication and division as equal groups, arrays, and
repeated addition. Number patterns and a final comprehensive review.

**Teaching Notes:**
- Weeks 27–28: use grids, stickers, or counters to build arrays physically.
- Week 29–30: introduce one or two memory tricks per table (e.g., "9s fingers",
  "× by 4 is double-double"). Don't rush — fluency develops over time.
- Week 31: keep division concrete — "share 12 candies among 3 friends."
- Week 32: make it fun — a math scavenger hunt, board game, or timed challenge
  with a certificate at the end.

Each checkpoint is informal: a mix of timed facts, problem-solving, and
a "show what you know" activity. No letter grades — track progress with
mastery notes.

## Pacing Guidance

- **Stay flexible.** If a concept needs more time, extend it and compress
  later weeks. The curriculum is a roadmap, not a railroad.
- **Spiral back.** Briefly revisit earlier concepts during mixed-practice
  days to maintain retention.
- **Accelerate when ready.** If facts to 20 come quickly, move faster
  through Phase 1 and spend more time on multiplication.
- **Review weeks are built in** (Weeks 6, 14, 20, 26, 32) — use these to
  gauge readiness, not to teach new material.
