In 1620, a ship called the Mayflower sailed from England. On board were about one hundred passengers. Many of them were Pilgrims — people who wanted the freedom to worship in their own way.
The voyage took about two months. The ship was crowded, the sea was stormy, and many people felt seasick. At last they saw land and settled a place they called Plymouth.
Their first winter was terribly hard. In spring, a Wampanoag man named Squanto taught them to plant corn and catch fish. In the fall, the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag shared a big feast of thanks — a story we remember at Thanksgiving.
