A pharaoh had ALL the power in Egypt. Nobody voted for the pharaoh. When a pharaoh died, his son — or sometimes his daughter — became the next ruler. The pharaoh's word was law, and pharaohs ruled for their whole lives.
Today, many countries choose their leaders by voting. In the United States, grown-ups vote for a president. The president must follow the laws too, and can only lead for a few years before people vote again. That is very different from ancient Egypt!
But some things are the same. Leaders then and now must make big decisions, keep people safe, and plan for the future. Great buildings still get built — but today workers use cranes and trucks instead of ramps and sleds!
