Ancient Egypt had powerful rulers called pharaohs. A pharaoh was like a king — but even more! Egyptians believed the pharaoh was chosen by the gods to lead them. The pharaoh made the laws, led the army, and owned all the land.
Pharaohs wore special crowns. The white crown stood for Upper Egypt in the south, and the red crown stood for Lower Egypt in the north. When Egypt became one kingdom, pharaohs wore a double crown — both together! They also carried a crook and a flail, symbols of caring for and protecting their people.
There were about 170 pharaohs over 3,000 years. Some famous ones were Tutankhamun (the boy king), Ramses II (who ruled for 66 years), and Hatshepsut — a woman who became one of Egypt's greatest rulers!
