# English Language Arts — 2nd Grade

**Duration:** 32 Weeks | **Structure:** 5 Phases | **Format:** Daily multi-page lessons (Mon–Fri)
**Student Age:** 7 years old | **Goal:** Build reading, spelling, and writing skills through integrated instruction

---

## Core Philosophy

**Every activity must teach something.** We avoid pure busy work — word searches, puzzles, and games exist as *reinforcement* after the student has already engaged with the concept. The learning progression each week:

| Stage | What Happens | Student Role |
|---|---|---|
| **I Do** | Explicit instruction with clear examples | Listen, observe, follow along |
| **We Do** | Guided practice with support | Try with scaffolding (word banks, sorting, matching) |
| **You Do** | Independent application | Apply the skill on their own |
| **Transfer** | Real-world use | Write, read, and use the skill in context |

---

## The Three Strands

Every week touches all three simultaneously:

1. **PHONICS** — Sound patterns and decoding skills
2. **SPELLING** — Vocabulary words built around the phonics pattern (12 words/week, 6+ letters minimum)
3. **GRAMMAR** — One focused grammar concept per week

These aren't separate units — they reinforce each other. Week 2 (silent e) isn't just "spell these words" — it's "here's how silent e changes vowel sounds, here are words that use it, and here's how to identify it in reading."

---

## Weekly Structure

| Day | Focus | What It Looks Like |
|---|---|---|
| **Monday** | **Learn It** | Introduce the phonics pattern, grammar concept, and 12 Words of the Week. Build vocabulary with word cards (word + definition + example). Pattern identification practice. |
| **Tuesday** | **Practice It** | Deep dive into the pattern. Sort words by sound, identify patterns in reading, correct errors, practice grammar concept with guided exercises. |
| **Wednesday** | **Connect It** | Word relationships (synonyms, antonyms, word families). Context clues. Apply grammar in sentence-building activities. |
| **Thursday** | **Use It** | Writing integration. Students compose original sentences and short paragraphs using the week's words and grammar skills. Reading comprehension. |
| **Friday** | **Show It** | Assessment (spelling check, pattern quiz, grammar application). Review game. Reflection on what was learned. |

**Minimum 3 pages per day. 5 days = 15+ pages per week.**

---

## Design Rules

- **Word List:** 12 words per week, STRICTLY 6+ letters, thematically connected
- **Writing Lines:** Full-width lines for sentences/paragraphs. Short blanks for fill-in. Three styles rotate: solid (`___`), dashed (`- - -`), double (`═══`)
- **Color Scheme:** Teal (primary) + Coral (accent) — consistent across all lessons
- **Output:** PDF format, saved to `Week[NN]/[Day]/` subfolders
- **Reading Integration:** Short passages woven into every lesson (fiction, facts, or mystery — rotated)
